Medicinal Shrubs and Herbs (Ayurvedic plants)
From the dawn of civilization, India has made use of medicinal herbs and plants. In fact 70% of all medicines derive their drugs from herbs and shrubs. It is understood that about 10,000 species of medicinal herbs and plants are known in China and used by modern science. In India nearly 2000 species are known to scientists, while the tribal people know about 7500 species. There is a huge gap to be covered by scientists, while they are interacting with the tribal people. About 60% of our medicinal plants occur in the Western Ghats. These need to be protected from various factors like habitat loss, over-exploitation, pressure from exotic species and the introduction of plants such as lantana, hyacinth etc.
