Wildlife Sanctuaries & National Parks in Andaman & Nicobar Islands
Located away from the mainland in the Bay of Bengal, this small group of Islands is a picturesque tourist paradise. Tropical evergreen and moist deciduous forests fill the landscapes. These forests have many local varieties of fascinating birds and reptiles. There is a large number of varieties of mammals also in Andaman & Nicobar Islands but most of these have been remain to be explored. These islands are also home of many ancient tribes whose existence is under threat due to hegemonistic modern civilizations.
Port Blair is the capital of this union territory and also the entry point to the islands. It is reached from Chennai or Kolkata either by sea or by air. Many wildlife sanctuaries are closed to visitors and only a few can be visited. Usually permission for 2 weeks is given to visit open areas in and around Port Blair, on arrival, but for longer stay and visit to other areas like Nicobar Islands etc. special permission is to be obtained.
